As per the Apple’s instructions, if you are using Apple 2 nd generation TV, then you have to make sure that TV and your device (iPhone/iPod/iPad) both are connected to the single network. But if you are using 3 rd generation Apple TV and your iPhone/iPad has iOS8 then there is no need to connect both the devices on the same Wi-Fi.
